Editorial Redesign
A second round of design directions with a sharper brief: spiritual, but modern — spa calm, Vogue editorial confidence, Italian craft, GQ precision. Eight look directions below; the four strongest are built out as full live comps (website front page + mobile app dashboard). Companion pages: Logo Refresh (10 marks in this aesthetic) and Brand & Marketing (guidelines, strategy, monetization features).
The brief, distilled
Who it's for
Women 18–50 with cosmopolitan taste — California healthy living, goal-focused, fluent in wellness culture. Plus content creators and influencers who need the product to look good on camera.
What it must feel like
Calm but exciting. Premium but accessible. Spiritual without being occult — the mysticism is a vehicle for daily constructive habits: positive thinking, progress, accomplishing goals.
What it must do
Convert broad, popular audiences; photograph beautifully for social; support habit loops (streaks, rituals, goals) and monetization (membership, reports, boutique) without feeling like a casino.
What it builds on
The shipped product: 8 belief systems, real natal-chart engine, 78-card tarot, points/levels/badges, connections & compatibility, shop with candles and intention kits — see Feature Inventory.
Eight look directions
Each tile is a palette + typography + mood in miniature. Directions 1–4 are built as full comps below; 5–8 are strong alternates that can be promoted to full comps on request.
La Rivista
The app as a daily fashion magazine: ivory paper, ink hairlines, huge Didone serifs, numbered rubrics, your reading as "the cover story." High-fashion confidence with zero neon mysticism.
Built belowTerme di Luce
Travertine, sage and plaster; Roman arches as the signature shape; readings framed as "immersions." The calmest of the eight — pure spa serenity with Italian architecture underneath.
Built belowAtelier Notte
Charcoal and champagne, sharp grotesque headlines against italic serif accents, the "regimen" instead of the ritual. Confident, tailored, unisex — pulls in the audience that finds pastels saccharine.
Built belowThe Golden Hour
Cream, blush and apricot glow gradients; affirmations and goals as share-ready story cards; goal rings and friend streaks up front. The most Instagram-native and the most monetizable of the eight.
Built belowRiviera Moderna
Sun-washed terracotta, sea-glass and lemon; hand-painted tile motifs as section dividers; vacation energy applied to daily practice. Warmer and more playful than Terme, more Italian than Golden Hour.
AlternateMarmo e Ottone
White marble surfaces, brass hairline rules, serif small caps, deep shadows. Five-star-hotel materiality — the aesthetic of the Solar Return report as a physical object.
AlternateStudio Milano
Flat color-block posters, geometric suns and moons, bold grotesque type — Olivetti and 1960s Milanese design studios. The most "design object" direction; zero mysticism clichés survive it.
AlternateIl Velluto
Espresso-plum velvet darks lit by amber candle-glow gradients; tactile, intimate, sensorial. The natural skin for evening rituals, the tarot table and the candle boutique.
AlternateThe four alternates aren't runners-up so much as surfaces: Riviera Moderna is a campaign skin, Marmo e Ottone is the premium-report and packaging language, Studio Milano is the badge/merch/icon system, Il Velluto is dark mode. A brand this size can hold one primary look plus these as supporting registers — that mapping is formalized on the Brand & Marketing page.
Direction 01 — La Rivista, built
Website front page as a daily Italian fashion magazine; the mobile dashboard is "today's edition" — cover story, card plate, numbered practice list, streak band.
Direction 02 — Terme di Luce, built
Italian thermal-spa serenity: stone and sage, arch-shaped cards, readings as "immersions," a streak that grows like a garden. The calmest daily driver.
Direction 03 — Atelier Notte, built
GQ-grade dark tailoring: transit ticker, "the regimen" (read → intend → act → log), stat row for streak/level, the Solar Return report positioned as the tailored suit of astrology.
Direction 04 — The Golden Hour, built
California glow for the creator economy: affirmation story cards with a share button on the card itself, Apple-style goal rings, friend streaks, glow gradients that film beautifully.
Design rationalization
What changed from Round 1 (Celestial Atelier / Sanctuary / Observatory), and why:
- From cosmic to editorial. Round 1 leaned on starfields and indigo — beautiful, but it competes with every astrology app on the store. Round 2 borrows its authority from fashion and hospitality instead: paper, stone, marble, tailoring. Nobody else in the category looks like a magazine or a spa; that's the ownable gap.
- Habit-first framing. Every comp puts the daily loop (read → intend → act → log) above the fold on mobile. The mysticism is the voice; the product is a five-minute practice that compounds — which is also what retains and monetizes.
- Camera-ready by default. Golden Hour's story cards, Rivista's cover plates and Notte's ticker are all designed to be screenshot and shared as-is — the interface is the marketing asset. Creators shouldn't need a press kit; the app should hand them content.
- Calm + exciting is a rhythm, not a compromise. Spa-calm surfaces (ivory, stone, whitespace) with one confident jolt per screen (a huge serif line, a champagne stat, a glowing card). Excitement comes from typography and contrast, never from clutter or neon.
- Italian thread throughout. Numbered rubrics (No. 1, i/ii/iii), "edizione," arches, terme, atelier — a consistent old-world craft accent that elevates without excluding; all copy stays English-first.
Scoring against the goals
| Direction | Broad appeal | Creator/social | Calm ↔ exciting | Habit fit | Monetization fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 01 La Rivista | Strong | Strong | Balanced — confident | Daily edition = daily open | Membership as subscription-to-a-magazine |
| 02 Terme di Luce | Broadest | Moderate | Calm-leaning | Rituals native | Boutique & membership feel natural |
| 03 Atelier Notte | Narrower | Strong | Exciting-leaning | Regimen framing | Best premium-price posture |
| 04 Golden Hour | Strong (younger) | Strongest | Balanced — warm | Goal rings + streaks | Best viral/gamified fit |
Lead with The Golden Hour as the product's daily skin, framed by La Rivista for the marketing site and brand voice — glow and goal rings where the user lives, magazine confidence where the world first meets Lumenal. Keep Il Velluto as dark/evening mode, Marmo e Ottone for the premium report and packaging, and Studio Milano for badges and merch. Terme di Luce remains the fallback if focus-group feedback says "calmer"; Atelier Notte if it says "more premium." The focus-group apps can be reskinned to A/B this directly.
